What exactly does "Objects of this type can have files" mean?

There is an option in Object Type properties that says "Objects of this type can have files". This option enables users to drag and drop files on top of non-document objects, attaching the files directly to the object, instead of storing them as independent documents in the vault. Files attached to another object do not have metadata of their own, and only show up via the owner object.

The screenshot below illustrates the difference between independent documents and files that have been attached to a non-document object:
