HOWTO: Disable automatic empty line when using multi-select dropdowns
Posted by Rami Aalto (M-Files) on 23 April 2018 10:44 AM

In M-Files 2018, when selecting a value from a dropdown on a metadata card, an additional empty line is created automatically. This is handy in most cases, but there are also circumstances in where you might want to disable this feature.

How to do it

Changing the multi-select feature is done in M-Files Admin tool by editing the metadata card configuration on a per property basis.

  1. Open M-Files Admin tool
  2. Navigate to the desired document vault and check what ID the property definition has
  3. Navigate to Configurations
  4. On the right panel, select Metadata card > Advanced -tab
  5. Copy and paste the example code:

    {
        "Rules": [
            {
                "Guid": "3549ecc0-b128-40a8-a68b-4823b7485068",
                "Name": "No Empty Line",
                "Behavior": {
                    "Properties": [
                        {
                            "Property": "1090",
                            "AutoEmptyLine": false
                        }
                    ]
                }
            }
        ]
    }

  6. Edit the Property to match the ID of the multi-select property (1090 in example code)
  7. Click Save
  8. The new settings are applied instantly when users load a metadata card into view. This can be done simply by selecting another item in M-Files.

If you need to disable the automatic empty lines for several properties, you can add the other properties to the same rule:

{
    "Rules": [
        {
            "Guid": "3549ecc0-b128-40a8-a68b-4823b7485068",
            "Name": "No Empty Line",
            "Behavior": {
                "Properties": [
                    {
                        "Property": "1090",
                        "AutoEmptyLine": false
                    },
                    {
                        "Property": "1091",
                        "AutoEmptyLine": false

                    }
                ]
            }
        }
    ]
}
