HOWTO: Show more than 50 items in valuelists
Posted by Rami Aalto (M-Files) on 23 April 2018 12:06 PM

Valuelists in metadata cards can easily have a lot of items. The amount of shown items can be limited by typing the first letter/letters of the items name. Valuelists can show a maximum of 50 items by default, but if you have for example 65 items on your list and you need to show them all at once, it can be done with a small registry key tweak.

Things to consider before using this setting

  • Setting this threshold higher will have a performance impact as it takes longer to populate the valuelist before it can be shown to a user. In other words, setting this value too high can make M-Files feel awfully slow.
  • If this threshold is set lower, it will speed up opening the metadata card.
  • This key is set on a per user and per vault basis, so adding the key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE will not work.
  • Although this setting is set to a certain version, it is copied to newer client versions when updating the client software on the client computer

Setting the registry key

Usually the registry key and value name do not exist beforehand so you will need to create them manually. The registry setting is:

Key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Motive\M-Files\<version>\Client\Common\<Vault name>\DocumentPropertiesUI
Value name MaxValueListItemsInLookupListing
Data Type REG_DWORD (32-bit)
Value Data The number of objects that M-Files Server returns. The default value is 50

In the key, replace <version> with the M-Files version you are using and the <Vault name> with the name of the correct vault. For example, when using version 12.0.6550.8 and the used vault is named "Project Vault", the registry key would be HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Motive\M-Files\12.0.6550.8\Client\Common\Project Vault\DocumentPropertiesUI

A reboot on the client computer is needed for the setting to start working. Also restarting the M-Files services on the client computer is an option.
