Store filedata in MS SQL or in file system?
Posted by Sakari Heinonen (M-Files) on 25 April 2018 07:49 PM

M-Files vaults that use MS SQL as the vault's database engine supports storing filedata on MS SQL or in the Windows file system. For larger vaults - in the range of hundreds of gigabytes or more - it is usually better to store filedata in the file system instead of inside MS SQL. This will usually increase the performance of the system because M-Files can access the files directly without loading them from the SQL server.

This will, however, make vault backups more complex as the metadata and filedata must be backed up separately in addition to the correct order - please see our backup policy in our knowledgebase for more information: https://kb.cloudvault.m-files.com/Default.aspx?#3ECA226F-7B54-428B-B539-DE443E6134EC/object/12DBD11C-9FF8-4839-9DE5-6F6277A48A1A/latest
