How to Import Employee Metadata from AD
Posted by Ville Karinen (M-Files) on 19 July 2018 09:55 AM
If you use an Employee object type to hold more metadata about your employees than what is available via the vault users and login accounts, you can fetch metadata for the Employee objects from Active Directory via the "Connection to External Database" tab in the object type's properties.

Here are example connection strings and SELECT clauses for importing data from AD:

Connection string:
Provider=ADsDSOObject;User ID=[domain\username];Password=[password];Encrypt Password=True;Data Source=LDAP://[DC_FQDN];Mode=Read;Bind Flags=0;ADSI Flag=-2147483648

SELECT statement:
SELECT samaccountname, cn, givenName, manager, title, company, department, mobile FROM 'LDAP://[DC_FQDN]/DC=[domain],DC=[domain_suffix]' WHERE objectClass='person'

So for example, the strings could look like this:
Provider=ADsDSOObject;User ID=ACME\administrator;Password=Password123;Encrypt Password=True;Data Source=LDAP://dc1.acme.local;Mode=Read;Bind Flags=0;ADSI Flag=-2147483648

SELECT samaccountname, cn, givenName, manager, title, company, department, mobile FROM 'LDAP://dc1.acme.local/DC=acme,DC=local' WHERE objectClass='person'

You can include any AD attributes you want in the SELECT statement instead of or in addition to the ones shown in the example.
