Windows 7, Windows Server 2016 and RPC server is unavailable error
Posted by Sakari Heinonen (M-Files) on 07 January 2019 03:48 PM

When creating a vault connection in Windows 7 to an M-Files server that uses Windows 2016 Server operating system, an "Access is denied" or "The RPC server is unavailable (0x800706BA)" error could be encountered.

The reason for this error is that Windows 7 uses older TSLv1 protocol by default: Windows 2016 will refuse these connections due to security reasons.

To fix this issue, it is possible to enable TLSv1.1/TLSv1.2 in Windows 7. The easiest way to do it by downloading and applying the "Easy fix" from Microsoft support site here:

Windows 7 will need at least Service pack 1 and KB3140245 Windows update from the Microsoft Update Catalog before applying the fix. This update will create the necessary registry key paths, it is quite old so it is likely that it is already present in the system.
