Getting Windows event logs for M-Files

1     Overview

M-Files support may require an event viewer log for investigating M-Files related issues in many cases. M-Files stores detailed logs for different M-Files events in Windows Event Viewer Log. These logs can be helpful while investigating and speed up the investigation.

2     Solution

The M-Files Server and part of the M-Files Desktop run as a service. M-Files cannot deliver all error messages to a user's screen. So, M-Files logs information and error notifications in Windows Event Viewer Log under (Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application Log). Administrators can use these logs to be automatically notified of M-Files application errors in the Windows Event log via email.

Logs should be taken from the specific workstation that is mentioned by the M-Files support personnel: M-Files server or M-Files client workstation. Steps to get event viewer logs:

  1. In Windows Server/PC go to the Start menu and type "Event Viewer" in the search field. Event Viewer should then be displayed in the search listing. Alternatively, you can go to, Control Panel > Administrator Tools > Event Viewer.
  2. In Event Viewer expand Windows Logs and then select Application. Event viewer > Windows logs > Application
  3. Then on the right side on "Actions" pane select "Filter Current Log..."
  4. From the Event sources list select M-Files and hit Ok button. Event view should only show M-Files events.
  5. Then you can click "Save Filtered Log File As..." from "Action" pane in the right side and save the logs as *.evtx-format.
  6. Compress and encrypt the exported log file (.evtx) using 7-Zip and send to M-Files support.
