Outlook Plugin crashes or slow performance

Version 1.0 | Last Updated June 28, 2019

1     Overview

M-Files Office plugin may cause slowness and possible crashes with Outlook or some other Microsoft Office products.

2     Solution / Workaround

There are several matters that can impact this.

1.1     Repair Office Installation

Try repairing the Office installation, Windows updates may have included something that breaks the plug-in functionality.

1.2     Disable M-Files Outlook Add-in

Use following registry key to disable the M-Files Outlook Add-in permanently:

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Motive\M-Files\<version>\Client\MFOfficeAddin
Value name: OutlookAddinDisabled
Value type: REG_DWORD (DWORD 32-bit Value)
Value data: 1   (to disable)

Check that the outlook doesn't have any resiliency registries defined for the Outlook:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<version>\Outlook\Resiliency\DoNotDisableAddinList

Edit the registry and disable "Asynchronous saving is enabled for Outlook"

Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Motive\M-Files\<version>\Client\MFOfficeAddin
Value name: OutlookSaveToMFilesAsync
Value type: REG_DWORD (DWORD 32-bit Value)
Value data: 0

1.3      Re-register Office Add-in

Re-registering M-Files Office Add-in may solve the issue, as some cases after upgrade of some Windows components or M-Files update, the correct .dll's are not registered.

Open a CMD in admin mode and run the commands:

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\M-Files\<M-Files version>\Bin\x86\MFOfficeAddIn.dll"
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\M-Files\<M-Files version>\Bin\x64\MFOfficeAddIn.dll"

1.4     Add Resiliency Logic

Adding resilience for M-Files Office Add-in may help. To do so, add following registry keys.

<ADDIN_NAME> is the name of the M_Files Addin (MFOfficeAddin) as found under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\

1x.0 is the office version, for example, 15.0 for Office 2013 and 16.0 for Office 2016

Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\1x.0\Outlook\Resiliency\AddinList
Value name: <ADDIN_NAME> [MFOfficeAddin]
Value type: REG_DWORD (DWORD 32-bit Value)
Value data: 1

Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\<ADDIN_NAME> [MFOfficeAddin]
Value name: LoadBehavior
Value type: REG_DWORD (DWORD 32-bit Value)
Value data: 3
