Documents created from a template to use the template workflow
Posted by Sakari Heinonen (M-Files) on 30 September 2019 11:32 AM

1     Overview

Document templates can have a workflow property attached to them, but this workflow information is not inherited to documents created from them. Inheriting the template workflow is prevented in order to eliminate the competition between default class workflow and template workflow.

2     Solution

To activate workflow inheriting from templates, add the following registry settings to the client computer via Windows Registry Editor and restart M-Files client:

Key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Motive\M-Files\<version>\Client\Common\NonVaultSpecifics\DocumentPropertiesUI
Value name CopyWorkflowFromTemplate
Value type REG_DWORD (32-bit value)
Description The behavior of workflow inheriting from document template. This setting will affect all vaults used by the client.
Value data

Template workflow is not inherited (default)

Template workflow is inherited

Note that for new documents created from the template, the workflow state will revert to the first available state of the workflow, regardless of what state the template itself is.

Also note that this setting will only work with classes without a default workflow; the default class workflow will always overwrite the template workflow property.
